Who We Are

At Project Street Vet, we believe that love has no address and kindness is a superpower. Our mission is simple yet powerful: to provide free, compassionate veterinary care to pet families experiencing homelessness or housing vulnerability, without judgment.

OUR STORY

Dr. Kwane Stewart

Founded by Dr. Kwane Stewart, Project Street Vet was born out of a simple act of kindness. What started as one veterinarian carrying a stethoscope and a simple medical kit through city streets has grown into a national nonprofit serving communities across the country. Our work is fueled by the belief that no one should have to choose between caring for themselves or their beloved pet, because pets are family. Period.

Our Solution

THE PROBLEM

Every day, thousands of companion animals and their humans live on the streets of the United States without access to vital healthcare and support. These families are at risk of illness and separation due to the lack of essential services for themselves and their pets, including veterinary care, pet-inclusive housing, food, transportation or training. The problem is further compounded by the fact that this specific population is often faced with no choice but to live on the street and forgo care for themselves if none is available for their pet, who they consider family and is often their only source of joy, companionship and purpose.

OUR SOLUTION

Project Street Vet aims to fill a need in the spectrum of access to care interventions by inspiring veterinary professionals and communities to reach vulnerable pet families directly where they are and provide humanitarian, professional and non-judgmental medical care with the goal of keeping pet families together. We fulfill our mission by both directly supporting Project Street Vet “Teams” to provide veterinary services to those experiencing homelessness and by providing training for others to do similar work independently in their communities.

OUR VALUES

  • We champion the inclusion of pets as part of the family unit and all pet families having equitable access to professional healthcare.

  • We believe in demonstrating kindness and compassion in our interactions with each other and all those we meet, without judgement.

  • We are committed to inspiring communities everywhere to cultivate humanity and increase direct access to healthcare for the whole pet family unit.

  • We embody empathy in understanding others’ perspectives, treating them with dignity and striving to make them feel heard in the workplace and out in the community.

  • We value sharing of knowledge, resources and tools with individuals and organizations that align with our values and goals so we can do more collectively.

  • We aspire to the highest standards of care and conduct in all our work.
